Running My First Half Marathon: The Surf City Half Marathon 2017 - Race Recap

Back in 2017, I decided to tackle my first half marathon. At the time, I thought I would be one and done, so if I was going to run 13.1 miles just once, I wanted it to be somewhere epic. That’s how I ended up signing up for the Surf City Half Marathon in sunny Southern California. I had family in Anaheim, so I figured I could visit them and cross a big goal off my list at the same time.

Midwest Winters and Terrible Training

Here’s the thing - I was living in southern Wisconsin at the time, and I hate the cold. So, what didn’t I think about? The fact that training for a February race meant running in November, December, and January. Not ideal. I tried my best, but the freezing temps and icy sidewalks meant my longest run before race day was only 7 miles. Spoiler alert: that’s not a great way to prepare for your first half marathon.

Race day came, and I was excited but totally undertrained and nervous! By mile four, I hit the wall. HARD. I couldn't fathom that I was only a little over a third of the way there, and I seriously considered turning around and heading back to the start. But then, out of nowhere, I spotted someone holding a sign for the Hogwarts Running Club (RIP to my first virtual running club). I was a member at the time, and seeing that sign reminded me that I'm a Gryfindor and we are courageous! That was the push I needed to keep going.

Race Day Vibes

The weather was absolutely perfect - sunny and cool! It was exactly what I’d hoped for when I signed up. The course was flat, which made it manageable even with my lack of training, and the views of Huntington Beach were stunning. Between the ocean breeze, palm trees, and the cute neighborhoods we ran through, there was plenty to distract me from how much my body hurt!

I took it nice and slow. I realized that no matter what my pace was, if I finished it was a PR! And a huge accomplishment. I was on the beach in Cali, and I just wanted to soak all of it up.

One of the highlights of the race came around mile eight, where a group was dancing to “Gangnam Style.” They were having so much fun, and their energy was infectious. I wish I had stopped and watched them for longer, but I just wanted to be done! And a Dairy Queen Blizzard. I still have no idea what made that pop into my head at that moment!

The Expo and Course Details

The Surf City Half Marathon expo was such a fun experience. There were tons of booths with running gear, gadgets, and fuel options to check out. On race day, the aid stations were well-stocked, but they didn’t have fuel until mile eight, which felt a little late to me. If you’re planning to run this race, I’d definitely recommend bringing your own gels or snacks.

Despite my rough training and hitting the wall so early, I somehow crossed the finish line. It wasn’t pretty, but I did it. That medal felt like a major victory - and not just because I could finally stop running!

Why I’d Recommend Surf City

If you’re looking for a half marathon in California, I can’t recommend the Surf City Half Marathon enough. The flat course, gorgeous views, and laid-back SoCal vibes make it a fantastic choice for both beginners and seasoned runners.

For me, this race was supposed to be a one-and-done deal, but it ended up sparking a love of running that I never saw coming. It taught me that I’m capable of more than I think, even when things feel impossible.
