How to Find Awesome Races to Run: Tips for Every Runner
Running races is one of the best parts of being a runner. Whether you're chasing a new personal record, ticking off another state on your race map, or just enjoying the camaraderie of the running community, finding the right races can make all the difference. But with so many events out there, how do you discover the ones that are truly worth running? Here are some tips and resources to help you find your next unforgettable race.
1. Talk to Other Runners at the Starting Line
One of the best parts of race day is the buzz at the starting line. Use this time to chat with fellow runners about their favorite races. Most runners are eager to share their experiences and might recommend events you’ve never heard of. Here are some icebreaker questions to get the conversation started:
- "Have you done this race before? How does it compare to others?"
- "What’s been your favorite race so far?"
- "Are there any hidden gems you’d recommend?"
These conversations often lead to insider tips about smaller, local races with stunning scenery or well-organized big-name events worth traveling for.
2. Join Running Facebook Groups
Facebook is home to countless running communities where members share everything from training tips to race reviews. Here are some ways to use these groups effectively:
- Search for race recommendations. Post in the group asking for suggestions for a specific type of race, like “bucket-list half marathons in the Midwest” or “flat and fast 10Ks.”
- Look for race recaps. Many runners love posting about their experiences, including details on course difficulty, crowd support, and swag.
- Get insider info. Group members often share discount codes, registration tips, or logistical advice (like the best hotels near the race start).
Some of my favorite groups include 50 Half Marathon's in 50 States, Friends of Vacation Races, Run 50 States Our Way, and The Run Princess Family. Many local groups can also give you insights into smaller races near you.
3. Explore RaceRaves
RaceRaves is one of my favorite websites! It's like Yelp for races, offering an extensive database of reviews from runners all over the world. Here’s how to make the most of it:
- Search by location or distance. Whether you’re looking for a scenic marathon in the Rockies or a festive 5K in your hometown, RaceRaves lets you narrow down options by state, distance, and date.
- Read reviews. Get honest opinions from runners who’ve been there, including details about the course, organization, swag, and overall experience.
- Create your own “Bucket List.” RaceRaves allows you to save races you’re interested in so you can plan your future race calendar with ease.
- Discover unique races. Find quirky themed events, destination races, or scenic courses you may not find through traditional search engines.

Bonus Tips:
- Follow race hashtags on Instagram. Many races create unique hashtags for participants to use, giving you a sneak peek at the event vibe, medal designs, and course scenery. You can also check the race planner's tagged photos on Instagram to see photos and videos from participants.
- Ask your local running store. Running store staff are often in the know about local races and can connect you with race organizers or running clubs.
- Join a running club. Members often run races together, and you’ll get firsthand recommendations from people you trust.
Finding the perfect race is part of the adventure, and the running community is an incredible resource to help you along the way. Whether you’re looking for a small-town event with a welcoming vibe or a high-energy city marathon, these tips will help you uncover races that excite and inspire you.
