Phoenix Wicked Half Marathon, 10K & 5K – Race Recap

Back in 2020, I participated in the Phoenix Wicked Half Marathon, 10K & 5K in Peoria, AZ, and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and “normal” races I ran that year. With so many events canceled or scaled down, this race stood out as a bright spot, complete with a festive Halloween theme, beautiful scenery, and excellent organization.

Race Production: A 2020 Highlight

Considering the challenges of 2020, the race organizers did an incredible job pulling off a safe and well-run event. The check-in process was smooth, the course was well-marked, and there was even a small expo to enjoy!

In a year where most races were pared down or virtual, having an in-person event with an expo felt like a treat. It brought a sense of normalcy and community that was so needed during that time.

The Course: Flat and Scenic

The course followed paved running trails around Rio Vista park in Peoria, and it was very flat - making it both beginner-friendly and a great option for anyone chasing a PR. The layout was easy to follow, with clear signage and plenty of space for runners to spread out.

The desert scenery was absolutely beautiful. Even now that I live in the Phoenix area, these trails remain one of my favorite places to run.

The Halloween Theme: Fun and Festive

The race had a Halloween theme, and runners were encouraged to dress up in costumes. While not many people opted to dress up, I fully embraced the theme and wore a costume I had originally planned for the canceled runDisney Wine and Dine Half Marathon that was supposed to happen the following month.

I love running in costume - it ads a layer of fun and made the event feel even more festive. If you’re ever on the fence about wearing a costume for a themed race, I say go for it! Even if you’re one of the few, it makes the day so much more memorable.

Swag: Medal and Shirt Wins

The medal from this race was adorable, and it’s still one of my favorites on my rack. The race shirt was equally great - I wear it all the time! It’s always a bonus when race swag is both well-designed and comfortable enough to wear long after the event.

Final Thoughts

The Phoenix Wicked Half Marathon, 10K & 5K was such a highlight in a challenging year. Between the fantastic production, flat and scenic course, and the festive Halloween vibes, it was exactly what I needed in 2020.

For anyone considering this race, I highly recommend it. The paved trails and beautiful desert backdrop make it a great choice for runners of all levels, and the Halloween theme adds a fun twist to the experience.
