Fueling the Distance: My Favorite Long-Distance Running Fuels
Long-distance running is an adventure that challenges your body, mind, and spirit. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned during my journey as a runner is how vital proper fueling is. It wasn’t always easy - my first attempt at fueling while running was a complete disaster. I vividly remember my first half marathon where I hit the dreaded "wall" at just mile 4. Oops! My legs felt like lead, my energy tanked, and I spent the rest of the race just putting one foot in front of the other.
It took me a few more races to really understand why and how to fuel while running long distance. And as I’ve progressed through marathon training, I’ve experimented with different types of running fuel to find what works best for my body and, you know, actually tastes good. After a lot of trial and error, I’ve finally landed on a selection of go-to products that keep me energized, strong, and ready to tackle any distance. If you’re in the market for fuel recommendations, here are my absolute favorites:
ClifBloks Energy Chews
- Margarita Flavor
A salty-sweet option that provides a much-needed boost of sodium for hot or sweaty runs. These are a lifesaver on days when hydration is key. - Sour Green Apple Flavor
Tangy and refreshing, this flavor feels like eating a sour apple lollipop mid-run.
Gu Energy Gels
Gu gels are a staple in my fueling routine, offering quick and reliable energy in a variety of flavors:
- Chocolate Outrage: Rich and decadent, this gel tastes just like brownie batter!
- Birthday Cake: Tied for my favorite, because I love anything cake batter flavored!
- Campfire S'mores: Tastes like Chocolate Outrage but with marshmallow.
- Roctane Chocolate Coconut: If you like German chocolate cake you'll like this one!
- Roctane Sea Salt Chocolate: Balances sweet and salty flavors for an energy-packed punch.
- Espresso Love: A caffeine kick when I need an extra jolt of energy.
- Caramel Macchiato: Coffee + caramel = delicious.
Liquid IV Hydration Multiplier
Hydration is just as important as fueling, and Liquid IV is one of my favorite ways of keeping my electrolyte levels up. The powder is easy to mix into water, tastes great, and helps me stay hydrated and energized for the long haul.
ProBar Bolt Energy Chews
Packed with natural ingredients, these chews are a great option when I want something less processed. They’re easy to eat and gentle on the stomach, making them a solid addition to my long runs.
SaltStick FastChews
Electrolytes are non-negotiable during long runs, and SaltStick FastChews are my favorite solution. The coconut pineapple is my favorite flavor, and they help prevent cramps on those tough training days.

Gu Liquid Coffee
This liquid option is perfect because it's not as thick as the traditional Gu. The coffee flavor is smooth, easy to digest, and gets me back in the zone during my long runs.
Pickle Juice
Yes, you read that right - pickle juice! It might sound strange, but it’s incredible for preventing cramps. A shot mid-run can make all the difference on humid days.
Torq Energy Gel in Banoffee
This UK-based gel is a recent discovery, and it’s quickly become a favorite. The Banoffee flavor is unique and delicious, giving me a boost when I need it most.
Lessons Learned
Learning how to fuel properly while running was a process of trial and error. There were gels that tasted gross and chews that felt like too much effort to eat mid-stride. But with each misstep, I got closer to understanding what my body needed.
Now, as I prepare for my marathon, I feel confident in my fueling strategy. Whether I’m facing a grueling training run or race day itself, I know these products will keep me going strong. If you’re a runner still searching for your perfect fuel, don’t be afraid to experiment - it’s worth it to find the combination that works for you.
